"The writer is just answering a series of unuttered questions." ~ Jim Morrison
As I reflect on my young journey, I have found that being a writer is full of questions. I have been questioning subjects, styles, passions, and many other criteria. What am I supposed to write? What do I feel drawn to the most? How does this make me feel? Am I afraid of taking risks? Does this sound stupid? Will my message be understood as I intended it to be? Why do I write?
If the questions end, my writing ends.
I do believe that there will be no end to the questions on my writing journey, which I hope will continue for the rest of my life. I do not want the questions to end, actually. In a way, I feel like if the questions end, my writing ends. One of the questions I have been pondering is what medium, or services, should I be writing? I believe this is evolving into something that is truly my own.
My first plan was to learn how to copywrite to gain some income for my family. The more I looked into it, the more I found that it was not where my heart lay. I just couldn't get excited about it. My heart was drawn to mediums that expressed messages from my soul. I found that my heart was drawn to content writing, blogs, articles, devotionals, faith-based works, and more.
Being true to yourself is the soul of your writing.
I eventually removed the copywriting service from my website. I felt like it was not a true representation of the writing path I wanted to take. It was almost like I would be cheating my customers with a lack of inspiration, purpose, and practicality that was advertised. I wanted to be true to my mission statement in writing. I desired to be true to myself. Being true to yourself is the soul of your writing.
So, the question is, what medium do I choose to write? How do I choose this medium? I feel the best way to answer this and stay true to your soul is to write authentically. To write in a way that reveals what is hidden inside the deepest recesses of your soul, of your heart. Do not be shy in communicating what burns inside of you. This could be fiction or non-fiction. It could be an article or a cooking recipe passed down in your family that you want to share with the world. (A word of caution, ask your family first before you share said recipe). If you are true to what is inside you, that will come through in your writing. It will reach an audience and inspire them to act.
Writing is a journey to your calling.
For me, I believe that I am still formulating what my writing will look like. Right now, I have been inspired to write poems, op-eds, articles, devotionals, lessons, speeches, and more. In the future, I would love to tackle a book. Presently, I am crafting and developing my writing. Patience, determination, and persistence are what I need to find craft my writing and answer questions. Honestly, it may change from time to time. I see now writing as a journey to a deeper calling. I am being transformed into what I was intended to be with every word and keystroke as I seek to put what is in my soul on paper.
